For most of nutrition's modern history, the question has been what to eat. Circadian biology is quietly adding a second question: when.

Human metabolism is not constant across 24 hours. Insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance and fat oxidation all shift with the body's internal clock. In controlled studies, the same meal eaten in the morning and late at night produces meaningfully different blood-sugar responses.

Time-restricted eating — compressing daily food intake into a window of roughly 8 to 12 hours — has emerged as one of the most studied applications of this idea. Early trials suggest modest but consistent improvements in weight, blood pressure and markers of metabolic health, even without changing what people eat.

The research is still young, and the effects are not miraculous. But the direction is clear enough that mainstream guidelines are beginning to mention meal timing alongside food quality. For most adults, a practical starting point is simple: finish dinner earlier, and give the body a real overnight fast before breakfast.
